ABOUT VENICEVenice, Italy is located along the Northern Coast of the Adriatic Sea. Venice was created sometime around 500 AD, and over the ensuing centuries, the 118 islands which constitute Venice were connected by 160 canals and more than 400 bridges. However, most of Venice's buildings are built upon wood piles lodged in the clay soil of former marshes. Through centuries of mineralization, the wood piles have become petrified and stone-like. Venice is a beautifully unique city that displays a fragile and romantic world of another time period and is best enjoyed while gliding through the canals on a gondola.
As one of the top ten cultural destinations in the world, Venice offers much in the areas of architecture, cuisine, shopping, music, and performing arts. Venice's industries include its famous ornate glasswork--Venetian glass-- found in the district of Murano, and Venetian lace headquartered in the district of Burano.
Attractions
St. Mark's Square is the gathering place of the city. On one end of the square is St. Mark's Basilica, a lovely example of Byzantine Architecture.
Close to St. Mark's is the Doge's Palace; the palace's Moorish influenced construction began in 1309 as a ducal residence. Today it is a museum where paintings and relics recount Venice's storied past.
One of the most famous bridges in Venice is the Bridge of Sighs, so named by Lord Byron. The enclosed bridge was built in 1602 of white limestone for prisoners to walk from interrogation rooms across the Rio di Palazzo to the prison. |
